Discovering Narva Through Volunteering: A Journey with Vitatiim

For the past 3.5 months, I have been volunteering in Narva, Estonia, with an organization called Vitatiim. This experience has been an incredible journey of both personal growth and active engagement in the community. Through various activities like promoting Erasmus+ opportunities for youngsters, organizing sustainable cooking workshops, leading English Vibe Clubs, facilitating a media weekend, and taking on the role of a facilitator in a youth exchange, I have gained valuable skills while making an impact. However, beyond my volunteering responsibilities, I have also discovered the beauty of Narva—both in its cultural richness and through my daily explorations of the city.
Must-Visit Places in Narva

Narva, a city on the eastern border of Estonia, is often overlooked by travelers, yet it holds a unique charm that blends history, nature, and modern development. Walking through the city has become part of my routine, allowing me to uncover hidden gems and well-known landmarks alike. Here are some must-visit places in Narva that I highly recommend:
1. Narva Castle and the Hermann Fortress:
One of the most iconic landmarks of the city, Narva Castle stands as a testament to the region’s historical significance. With breathtaking views of the Narva River and the Russian Ivangorod Fortress across the border, it offers visitors a glimpse into the medieval past of Estonia. Inside the castle, there is a museum showcasing local history and exhibitions that highlight Narva’s cultural evolution.
2. Narva River Promenade:
This scenic riverside walk is perfect for a peaceful stroll, offering picturesque views of the river, the fortress, and even Russia on the other side. The promenade is beautifully designed, featuring modern sculptures, seating areas, and small cafes where you can relax while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.
3. Kreenholm Textile Factory
Once one of the largest textile factories in Europe, Kreenholm is a fascinating site that reflects Narva’s industrial heritage. While it is no longer operational, guided tours allow visitors to explore the abandoned factory buildings and learn about the city's economic history.
4. Narva Art Residency (NART)
For those interested in contemporary art, NART is an inspiring space that hosts international artists and organizes exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events. It’s a great place to engage with creative minds and witness the artistic pulse of Narva.
5. Joaoru Beach
A great spot for relaxation and outdoor activities, Dark Park is a beautiful green space ideal for picnics and nature walks. Close by, Joaoru Beach offers a refreshing escape in summer, with its sandy shores by the Narva River.
6. Alexander’s Cathedral
This grand cathedral is one of the most impressive architectural structures in Narva. Built in the 19th century, it remains a significant cultural and religious site in the city.
7. Victoria Bastion and Bastion Tunnels

A lesser-known but equally fascinating site, the Bastion Tunnels take visitors on an underground adventure through Narva’s defensive past. This historical attraction provides insight into the city’s military history and strategic importance.
8. Narva Jõesuu

Located just a short drive from Narva, Narva Jõesuu is a charming coastal town famous for its sandy beaches and relaxing atmosphere. It is one of Estonia’s best seaside destinations, known for its long coastline along the Baltic Sea and its historic spa traditions. The peaceful setting makes it a great escape for nature lovers and those looking to unwind.
9. Narva Town Hall

An often-overlooked but historically important landmark, Narva Town Hall represents the city’s rich past and its architectural heritage. It is a beautiful building worth visiting for those interested in the city's history.
10. Pimeaed (Dark Garden)

Pimeaed, also known as the Dark Garden, is a tranquil park situated in the heart of Narva. With scenic walking paths, seating areas, and a relaxing atmosphere, it’s a great place to take a break from city life and enjoy nature.
Final Thoughts
