What my experience as a volunteer in Narva means to me

I feel lucky to live in this place. I can start with the moment I wake up in the morning and I can see a white blanket of snow covering the sidewalks and the roofs of cars. Through the windows, every day I am amazed by the blocks of buildings with soviet architecture. Looking at the landscape, I remember the day when the snow seemed to sink the trees.

The night takes up more space than the day, so when I think of Narva and Narva-Jõessu (where I work), I think of the streetlights and the way they show how the snow falls.
When I go to work, I can see through the windows of the bus the border with Russia on the Narva River and all the forest that surrounds it, sometimes I even have time to take a look at the beach that always awaits me with the dark waves of the Baltic Sea, and every time I am there I feel that the world is great.
I work in a youth centre called "Narva-Jõessu Noortekeskus" where there are really lovely people, who make the routine more comfortable and fun. And about the children... I recently told someone that it is impossible for me not to smile if there are children around. I really think that I will always remember the first day I arrived and a girl told me that even though she didn't know me yet, she already loved me.

If I am going to talk about those children, I can only do so with sweetness. I keep all the drawings they have made for me. And I carefully treasure the memories I have with them, the funny anecdotes when they are cooking, the first time I put up a Christmas tree or when a child after a few weeks gave me a hug for the first time. He also gave me a tangerine.

All their sweet gestures, their fun games or their skills make me understand childhood better, and at the same time, they move me deeply.
An essential part of this experience are the people I have met. I am referring to those who live with me day to day, who make me feel welcome and comfortable with who I am. Also, to those who have made me cry of laughter, who have made me know that I am valuable or who have given me a space of calm in this gruesome world.
